However, it must be said that, although the city is still lit by oil, the quantity of Saigon\u2019s street lights makes up for their quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-container-2 wp-block-gallery-1 wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"http:\/\/aban.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/oil-lamp.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"3686\" data-link=\"http:\/\/aban.vn\/?attachment_id=3686\" class=\"wp-image-3686\"\/><figcaption> One of the original oil lamps on rue Catinat in 1895 <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Soon after this the technical obstacles were overcome, and in 1896 the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019\u00c9lectricit\u00e9 de Saigon was founded to supply electricity to the Cochinchina capital. In the same year, the company opened its first AC generating electricity station on the rue Nationale, the site still occupied today by the EVN H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh City Power Company (T\u1ed5ng c\u00f4ng ty \u0110i\u1ec7n l\u1ef1c th\u00e0nh ph\u1ed1 H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh) at 72 Hai B\u00e0 Tr\u01b0ng. A substation was later opened in Ch\u1ee3 L\u1edbn.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-container-4 wp-block-gallery-3 wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img src=\"http:\/\/aban.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Soci\u00e9t\u00e9-d\u2019\u00c9lectricit\u00e9-de-Saigon.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"3668\" class=\"wp-image-3668\"\/><figcaption> Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019\u00c9lectricit\u00e9 de Saigon <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" src=\"http:\/\/aban.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/m\u00e1y-ph\u00e1t-\u0111i\u1ec7n-xoay-chi\u1ec1u-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"3682\" data-link=\"http:\/\/aban.vn\/?attachment_id=3682\" class=\"wp-image-3682\"\/><figcaption> Three Laval turbines were installed in the 1896 electricity generating station <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Bulletin \u00e9conomique de l&#8217;Indo-Chine of 1908, \u201cIn Saigon, light is provided by the factory of the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d&#8217;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 de la ville de Saigon (SEVS), which is actuated by steam pumping apparatus with a driving force of 1,100 horsepower.\u201d Street lighting was initially confined to the two city centres and comprised arc lamps which generated light by creating a spark or electric arc between two carbon rods inside a gas-filled glass bulb.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1909, SEVS was bought out by the Compagnie des eaux et d&#8217;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 d&#8217;Indochine (CEE, founded 1900), which already held the concessions for water in Saigon and Ch\u1ee3 L\u1edbn and both water and electricity in Phnom Penh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this way, CEE secured a monopoly on the distribution of water and electricity in the three largest cities of Cochinchina and Cambodia. It would remain the largest of the three electricity suppliers in Cochinchina until the departure of the French, the other two companies being the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 centrale d&#8217;\u00e9clairage et d&#8217;energie (SCEE), covering C\u1ea7n Th\u01a1 and the Mekong Delta, and the Union \u00e9lectrique d\u2019Indochine (UNEDI), serving Cap Saint-Jacques and Phan Thi\u1ebft.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"864\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/aban.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CEE.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3688\"\/><figcaption>Source: cargocollective.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before World War I, electricity was used almost exclusively for street lighting, and the extent of the illumination remained extremely limited. In 1910, colonial lawyer George Durrwell commented that, even in the vicinity of the Saigon Municipal Theatre, \u201cthe lighting is very poor, despite the pretty penny spent from the municipal budget on the profusion of electric lamps. This is truly \u201clight hidden under a bushel.\u201d Only the place du Th\u00e9\u00e2tre forms a bright spot amidst the darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In June 1913, CEE moved to rectify this situation by opening a much larger AC three-phase electricity plant at Ch\u1ee3 Qu\u00e1n, with a design capacity of 5,000 kWH. By this time, CEE also had substations at the Chateau d\u2019eau [modern Turtle Lake], boulevard Norodom [L\u00ea Du\u1ea9n], Ch\u1ee3 \u0110\u0169i, Ph\u00fa Th\u1ecd, Kh\u00e1nh H\u1ed9i and T\u00e2n S\u01a1n Nh\u1ea5t, as well as within important civic installations such as the Palace of the Government, the H\u00f4tel de ville and the Municipal Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After World War I, the electrification of the Saigon tramway network and the increasing use of electricity for home lighting led to a significant increase in demand. Improvements in steam turbine design increased generator efficiency many times over, and by 1930, CEE\u2019s annual power output had reached 37.8 million kWH.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Demand for electricity increased further in the late 1930s, driven by an expanding economy and increased use of household electrical appliances.
